Carcinogenicity studies

Carcinogenicity studies are typically required for therapies expected to run continuously for at least six months (or intermittently for chronic or recurrent conditions).

Animals are observed for development of neoplastic lesions when exposed to the test therapy to evaluate the relevant risk in humans. Duration of carcinogenicity studies in transgenic or knockout mice models, for example, is determined by the kinetics of oncogenesis in the animal model being used in the bioassay. Toxicology and carcinogenicity studies can also be combined.
