Ovarian follicle counting (for ovarian toxicity)

The number of oocytes in primordial follicles (PMFs) established in fetal life are thought to represent the entire pool of potential gametes available to a female. Reproductive aging involves the depletion of PMFs; however, premature loss can be caused by genetic anomalies or gonadotoxic treatment. Histological counting can be used to estimate the total follicle numbers per ovary. Ovaries are serially sectioned, placed in order on microscopic slides and stained (usually with hematoxylin-eosin) and certain sections analyzed by light microscopy.

Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the follicles can be driven by the reproductive study design.
